Heat-pump, condenser or vented?

• Heat-pump: reuses heat during drying. Compare its label's energy figures and programme duration with the other models on your shortlist.
• Condenser: collects moisture as water. Check how the water container is emptied and whether the exact model supports a direct-drain connection.
• Vented: sends moist air outside. It needs a suitable external venting route that meets the appliance's installation instructions.

Heat-pump dryers also condense moisture: “condenser” and “heat-pump” describe different aspects of the drying process. Look at the technology stated for the exact model, not just whether it has a water tank.

Check the proposed location first

Measure width, height and depth, door opening and the manufacturer's required clearances. Check ventilation, the electrical supply and any vent or drain connection. For an unheated room, confirm the exact model's permitted operating temperatures before buying; do not assume that every dryer is suitable for a garage.
