How to Choose a Tumble Dryer

Choose the dryer type before comparing programmes. The three types handle heat and moisture differently, which affects where the appliance can go and the usual balance between energy use and cycle time.

How the types differ

  • Heat-pump: removes moisture by condensing it, then reuses heat from the warm, damp air to continue drying. This can use less energy than a conventional condenser dryer, but its programmes commonly take longer. Check the stated programme duration and capacity for the model you are considering.
  • Condenser: also turns moisture into collected condensate, but normally uses an electric heater to warm the air. A water container or a model-specific drain option deals with condensate; it is not the same thing as a vented dryer.
  • Vented: sends warm, moist air outside through an appropriate external vent. It needs an approved external-air route, so it is less flexible about location.

Make the decision practical

Match the dryer capacity to the loads you will dry. A headline drum size is not a promise that every programme takes that full load, so compare the programme table where bedding, synthetics or delicate fabrics matter. Measure depth as well as width and height, and leave the exact clearances in the product instructions. For a heat-pump dryer in a cold or unheated room, confirm the stated operating conditions for that exact model.
